I’m going to reveal all.
It’s been just over 10 years since YouTube added the ‘Like’ button, back in March 2010. In those 10 years, just 8 videos have held the top slot.
I’m going to break down the stats and the trends of the Top 30 most liked YouTube videos ever (as of October 2020). I’ll also tell you the story behind the most liked YouTube comment ever, which is a smart piece of marketing in its own right.

What is the most liked video on YouTube?
Let’s start with the statistics behind the number 1 most liked video on YouTube of all time.
- Currently, it stands at at 38.86 MILLION likes.
- It runs at 4.41 SECONDS.
- It has over 6.8 BILLION views.
- There have been over 3.4 MILLION comments.
- It has 4.6 MILLION dislikes.
- It’s been up for 1293 DAYS.
- There are 446 WORDS in the original (Spanish) lyrics.
Before we compare those numbers with the other top 29 most liked YouTube videos, let’s break them down:
- It has 6.8 billion views! Just to put that in context, there are 7.8 billion people on the planet today. Hands up if you’ve watched it 1000 times…
- On average, it has achieved 29,000 likes and 2,629 comments for every day it’s been up.
- Its like / dislike ratio is 89.36%. When compared to the other videos in the top 30, it’s in the bottom 5.
Despacito had a rapid rise to the top.
Its also been viewed more than 1 MILLION times in over 100 countries.
The history of the most liked video on YouTube
Before Despacito, there were 7 others.
Since YouTube added the ‘Like’ button in March 2010, Despacito is the 8th video to have held the top slot.

It’s already had the second longest reign after Psy’s Gangnam Style, which was on top for 1444 days.
That’s nearly FOUR years!
Before Gangnam Style, ‘See You Again’ By Wiz Khalifa was the most liked YouTube video for 332 days.
It was an emotional tribute song for the tragic death of Paul Walker during filming for Fast and Furious 7.
What is the most liked non music video on YouTube?
The only non-music video to have held the top slot on YouTube is KONY 2012: Invisible Children.
It went almost instantly to number 1, telling the powerful and emotional story of a dictator that very few of us had heard of.
It has gathered over 100 million views since 2012.
In total, it was the most liked YouTube video for just 18 days.
Here are the current updated statistics for the most liked videos on YouTube.
What is the most liked YouTube comment?
The most liked comment on YouTube is by Seth Everman on Billie Eilish’s video, Bad Guy. The video itself currently stands at 980 million hits. It has been the most liked YouTube comment since October 2019.
He simply tweeted: ‘i’m the bald guy’, which is a pun on the song Bad Guy.
The story behind the most liked comment on YouTube?
Seth Everman explains in his own words. In short, he decided to make a parody video showing how to make Billie Eilish’s video, Bad Guy.
Except he called it ‘Bald Guy’.
People watched his video and then went to hers and saw and liked the comment. And people saw the comment and went and watched Seth’s video. It quickly became YouTube’s most liked comment, and Seth’s video gained over 67 million views!
In other words, they blew each other up.
A very smart piece of marketing.

I’ve analysed the most liked YouTube videos and put together four infographics to break down the Top 30 in numbers, including:

- At 38 million likes, Despacito has almost double the amount of Faded by Alan Walker in 4th place (20 million likes).
- Despacito has almost 10 million more likes than its closest challenger – See You Again
Most liked video on YouTube by genre
Music videos are a clear winner when it comes to worldwide popularity.
The only non-music video in the Top 30 is a stunt by MrBeast, who released a video called Make this video the most liked video on YouTube.
It was a follow up to the famous Instagram egg, which broke Kylie Jenner’s record as the most liked picture on Instagram.
It’s currently at 54 MILLION likes. 😳
However, despite this one clear anomaly, the recipe for big success on YouTube seems to be loud and clear.
It’s music all the way.
The language of the Top 30 most liked videos on YouTube
The majority of the Top 30 most liked YouTube videos are in English.
- Of the Top 30 most liked Youtube videos, 63% are in English.
- Korean is well represented through Blackpink, PSY and BTS
- Spanish also features in multiple songs – including Despacito, which is number 1.
The most liked videos on YouTube by release date
The last 5 years have seen an influx of popular videos which have dominated the top slot.
The likelihood is that the videos that have been released in more recent years will continue to accumulate likes at a faster pace than those that were released a 7-10 years ago.
2015 was a tipping point that saw a real surge in the most popular videos.
2017 was when Despacito was released. Not only it this the most popular YouTube video, it was also the most popular year for videos to break through into Top 30.

Ed Sheeran‘s hit was the best selling song of 2017 – a blockbuster year where 7 of YouTube’s Top 30 most liked videos were released.
4 “Faded” – Alan Walker
- 20 million likes
- 2.3 million views
- 541k dislikes
- 97.42% like to dislike ratio
This has the highest like-to-dislike ration of all music videos in the Top 30 most liked. The only video to beat it is the only non music video in this list.
5 “Baby Shark Dance” – Pinkfong Kids’ Songs & Stories
- 19 million likes
- 6.3 billion views
- 8.7 million dislikes
- 68.7% like to dislike ratio
This is a music video in a much looser sense of the word. Unlike the rest, it’s not a highly-produced big budget film. Instead, it’s one of the most popular children’s songs on the planet. That might explain both its high number of views, as well as its much lower like-to-dislike ratio.

What can you learn from the most liked YouTube videos?
While the Top 30 most liked videos on YouTube might seem like a small sample size, there are a few statistics that stand out.
- The highest like-to-dislike ratio (98.45) is “Make This Video The Most Liked Video On Youtube” by MrBeast. This also happens to be the ONLY non music video on the list.
- Three languages dominate the Top 30: English, Korean and Spanish
- It seems obvious, but music videos are overwhelmingly the most popular type of videos on YouTube with 29 of the top 30 slots. It suddenly makes sense why they have such monster budgets.

This is based on ad revenue for views. The top YouTubers make money from all types of income sources, including affiliate links and brand collaborations.

The most liked video on YouTube: a conclusion
The most liked videos continue to attract millions of views and thousands of likes a day.
In the case of Despacito, it’s averaged over 29,000 likes for every single day it’s been up.
The overwhelming majority of the Top 30 most liked YouTube videos are in English, and all but one of them is a music video.
Out of the Top 30 most liked YouTube videos ever, several bands / individuals have more than one entry:
- BTS: 4 entries
- Blackpink: 3 entries
- Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber: 2 entries
Interestingly, the two bands with the most entries are BTS and Blackpink, both from South Korea.
The most popular year for Top 30 entries is 2017.
This is far enough back to have accumulated plenty of views and likes, but still recent enough to take advantage of the increase in YouTube’s growing popularity.
